In the third installment in James E. Carroll’s Jamie Carson series, a Cape Cod community bracing for a winter storm is rocked by the discovery of a body half-buried in a salt pile. The victim is HOA president Tony Brown, his throat slashed. Before Tony’s girlfriend, Diana, speaks with police, trial attorney Jamie Carson agrees to represent her. That decision soon looks wise. Tony Brown turns out to have a concealed criminal past, Diana is withholding important information, and the investigation begins producing facts that make her innocence increasingly questionable.

Carroll builds suspense with an early reversal, when the medical examiner finds that Tony didn’t die from a brutal knife attack. Instead, he died from an insulin overdose.  Interestingly, Jamie also learns that Diana and Tony had been obtaining lower-cost Canadian prescription drugs for Northport retirees struggling to afford their medications. What Diana saw as an illegal but compassionate effort had quietly expanded into something far larger and more profitable, potentially creating a new motive for Tony’s killer. 

Here, Carroll’s Cape Cod is less postcard scenery than a highly convincing off-season social world. He builds the setting through the rhythms of year-round life. Think a maintenance supervisor checking the community’s salt supply before a snowstorm, retirees trading gossip and board members fighting over fees and renovations. The Cape’s marinas, restaurants, courtrooms and quiet residential enclaves feel appropriately functional rather than decorative, and Northport itself becomes a particularly effective mystery setting. The community operates socially like a small town, where private grievances travel quickly and almost everyone seems to know something about everyone else.

As in Carroll’s previous series book Cross Examination, Stephanie becomes an increasingly important investigative partner. She and Jamie once again challenge a prosecution built around seemingly persuasive evidence by digging into overlooked motives, institutional secrets and alternative suspects. The difference is that this case is more personally and strategically complicated, since Diana repeatedly withholds information that could damage her own defense. The added uncertainty gives Jamie’s familiar methods greater tension, while Stephanie emerges as an even more important investigative partner.

Carroll is especially good at showing how defense work becomes investigation, as each incriminating fact forces Jamie and Stephanie to test another assumption, revisit another witness or look for another person with the same access and motive the prosecution attributes to Diana. Meanwhile, Jamie is constantly paranoid about what else his client isn’t telling him. Readers can also look forward to an unexpected reveal that changes the shape of the case without reducing the mystery to a last-minute trick.

Murder on Cape Cod will be well-received by series fans, and its self-contained murder case and naturally introduced recurring characters make it an easy entry point for readers new to the series.
