Attorney. Trial Lawyer. Storyteller.
James E. Carroll
My motivation for writing legal thrillers…
I once read that Scott Turow described his first year in law school as if he had entered a world where even the words that were spoken, such as replevin and estoppel, were so archaic and mysterious that he wondered whether he would ever become a lawyer. I remember the day I was sworn in as a new lawyer by the Clerk of Courts, John E. Powers, and I promised that “I will delay no man for lucre or malice” … what did I agree to? Yes, becoming and being a lawyer, a good lawyer, takes dedication, commitment and hard work. After working in a profession that I treasured for forty-three years, I wanted to bring to life for readers what happens behind the scenes and on the back stairs of courthouses and in law firms where men and women toil every day to advocate on behalf of someone who finds themselves caught in the maw of justice. My stories have come from years of meeting those people.
Reasonably Foreseeable - the first Jamie Carson Legal Thriller
I introduce Jamie Carson in this series opener working for the big law firm Ely, Snow & Carson facing the challenge of having to tackle the establishment. The setting is in a Connecticut Superior Court, and the case involves a civil lawsuit for damages brought against the City of New Tisbury and its police department. To find justice for immigrant Sidika Bosquert, the investigation takes the reader from Connecticut political offices to the foreign shores of Istanbul, the international banking trade in Lichtenstein and the dirt alleys of Kapikoy, Turkey to find the evidence that is needed to win a difficult case against all odds. This book was a Finalist in the Best Thrillers competition.
Cross Examination – Jamie Carson Legal Thriller Series Grows
In Cross Examination, new characters appear in Jamie Carson’s social and professional life. Jamie is appointed by the court to defend pro bono a stockbroker charged with the murder of a woman visiting from England. The case has Jamie and his team, led by his fashionable partner, Stephanie Marx, defending the client in both federal and state court proceedings. The team discovers a scheme to frame Jamie’s client, traveling to England and the Isle of Man, for the evidence that might help the defense of the client. The reader watches the action from the perspective of a juror deciding the fate of Jamie Carson’s client. Independent Book Reviews calls this novel “A tense and atmospheric legal thriller featuring murder and fraud”.
Murder On Cape Cod – the third Jamie Carson Legal Thriller
In this story, Jamie Carson’s father, Harrison, asks that his son defend a friend of his at his condominium complex on Cape Cod who is about to be charged with the murder of her boyfriend, the President of the HOA. She is a former Big Pharma executive who got involved in a scheme to import prescription medications to sell to residents of the condo complex at drastically lower prices than available in the United States. The District Attorney is desperate to indict someone for the murder before the tourists start arriving for the summer season. Hollywood Book Reviews awarded this book a badge of Excellence and said “James E. Carroll combines authentic courtroom realism with edge-of-your-seat suspense.
